Dear members of the R2W community,

As bombkicker pointed out, the forums have been rather troglodytic, so I encourage you to participate in the following "for fun" guessing game.

I am no longer able to compete in Ironman Arizona this weekend for obvious reasons, but I am still going because shoot, I already paid a lot for it. And, since both my doctor and my lawyer gave me the okay, I am going to do the swim. So, I will allow each one of you to make one prediction for my time for the 2.4 mile swim.

Predictions must be submitted by 11:59pm Eastern Time on Saturday November 21 (the race starts at 7am whatever time Phoenix time is on Sunday).

You can simply make a guess, or maybe do some homework, which could include searching my past race results, checking out my log, or rmailing me queries.

I'll try and arrange some sort of prize for the winner, which will be CLOSEST to the pin, not Price is Right rules (closest without going over). For instance, if X guesses 1:01:00 and Y guesses 1:00:57, and I swim 1:00:59, X wins because they were closest.

As of right now I will be wearing my chip, I just have to get the final go-ahead from my lawyer. In the event I am not wearing it, I will use my watch time.

fstrnnr - if you still even read these forums, you gonna come out and watch? I'll be there from Thursday night til Monday morning. After I'm done swimming I'll be supporting my friend who is racing the whole thing.

I have no clue what to guess, so I'll go with 1:06:12. That time means nothing to me, it is a total guess.

Break a leg, maryland!!!!

Nothing personal here but I saw someone win with this guess when Brewpat held a similar competition.

I'll go with a DNF

The nature of this competition is to simply guess my swim time. Due to getting hit by a car I am not able to complete the entire IM. That's why I'm just going to do the swim. It would, quite simply stated, be impossible for me to not finish that. It's certainly not as difficult as whatever 50 mile run Brew was doing, this is less than an hour of swimming.

Unless there are sharks in Tempe Town Lake.

how much do you conserve when you know you have more of a race to go? can you give a % you believe you probably conserve while swimming?

I'd say I never swim more than 85% effort in most of my races that involve riding and running after. I like to come out of the water feeling warmed up, not tired.

We have until when to guess? I need to think on this one and weigh your lameness against your super elivated swimming abilities lately due to lameness. Think might take some focus on my part.

So is "less than an hour of swimming" a hint?

My guess is that you will drown. See you in heaven...or hell. (just kidding) ok so for real I would say 30 min 5 seconds.

Ok...Ill be "that guy". 30 min 5 seconds is a totally ridiculous estimation. Now you could be going on absolutely zero knowledge of swimming speed but 30 min for a 2.4 mile swim would be tremedous.

Now for marylandexc, my guess would be 1:07:32 depending on how hard you plan on going. I did creep a bit and saw you ran a quarter with some difficulty so is it fair to assume you aren't planning on killing yourself for this swim?
Good luck

Missed the date originally. Was on my phone so can't read much.

My guess is 57:12. I'm expecting a good swim.

Seriously 30 minutes. Did you tack on the 5 seconds to give him a little buffer zone! Look out Phelps.

He ran a quarter with difficulty because he was hit friend. Creep a little more.

No, I knew he was hit, I meant I didn't know how fast he was recovering. I realize how bad the hit was and it really is impressive that he's going through with this swim. I was just trying to base my guess on how well he will feel by the time of the race because if he hurts for a quarter might he also hurt for a 2.4 mile swim? Maybe not, I dont know.

As a frame of reference:

I can swim fine. My fitness level is pretty darn good still, because I'm a champion, and I'm swimming faster than I ever have because that's all I can do. Running has nothing to do with my swim fitness right now and my knee does not impede me.

Conditions in Tempe are good. Chilly in the morning, which doesn't matter in the water really. I have a stuffy nose right now but don't think that will play out on Sunday.

You all have about 24 hours to keep guessing!

Alright so this will be my last update before the race...

Got into the water today. SUPER cold. 62 or 61 degrees I think. Swam my warmup swim without a cap and my brain nearly died. Gonna be pretty hard to sight I think on the way out (into the sun as it's rising). Also not sure how we get out of the water, the way we got out today was via a difficult (well, for a recently reconstructed knee) step thing from the deep water. Not sure if they plan on changing that, but the mats will be outside that. Could add potentially 20-30 seconds onto the "actual" time.

Since the pressure's off for me I don't need to be nervous, but I am getting a little concerned for my leg getting knocked around by 2000 people. Hoping to be able to get a good start position and then gonna have to get out fast!

isitsafe? I think you won...I'm tired because I've been on my feet since 4am local time (it is now 8pm) and in the sun and heat so I'll sort through them tomorrow.

I'll give a better recap later but it was a hard swim. Like I said before, I've never done a mass swim start like this. My knee took a BEATING. It was rough, and for a few moments I was not swimming but trying to go horizontally over to the far side of the lake so I would stop getting pounded. I was just too far in the middle.

So I finally got moving and passed a lot of people, still a ton of people by the halfway point, and the swims for even the pros seemed slow.

1:02:23, 216th overall I think and 13th in my age group. That stings because out of the top 10 in my AG, only 2 swam faster than me and the kid that won swam slower, rode about what I would have ridden and then ran probably a little faster - but top 3 could have been a good shot!

Looks like it's me, b**ches.

Maryland, nice swim. I guess it can be a melee at the start of a tri. It looks like it's all a**holes and elbows in that scrum. Glad to see you survived. It must feel good to get back in the game, even though it sucks to not be able do everything you want.

It seemed like a nice play in my head but I was completely wrong and my ignorance was fatal because I should have realized that it's easier to drop out of a run than a swim...because dropping out of a swim requires drowning.
