Does anyone know what are elite times for running a marathon? |

It takes a 2:19 to qualify for the Trials. But, that isn't necessarily "elite." |

yes well i did 20 in 2 hours and 3 min over the summer to get in shape for XC season and i was only hitting like 85-90 mile weeks at that time so i figure in two years after i graduate ill up the miles up and i should be around a 2:40 for my first one. |

Bad things happen after 20 miles. It is, after all, the half way point. |

for starters i did actually run 27 before and its not the halfway mark if you can actually do math. Secondly its just another 6 miles and i still have another 2 years of college running left so i think i should be fine lol |

trust me i think i understand the meaning of pain after all the races ive been through. Actually the funny thing is since we all are runners we kinda enjoy a bit a pain don't we haha. |

You know I have to agree with Brew--I've heard the exact same thing from friends of mine who have run a marathon(s) before. I've begun training for one in April (if I'll be ready to compete is still up to question!) and have logged 20 mile days before no problem as a collegiate runner, so I figure how much harder can it be huh? The war stories I've heard sure made me question that... The marathon is a fo' shizz test of manhood. Good luck in the future btw! |

As someone who ran competitively through high school and college and had real pain during hard races, I can tell you that the marathon is in an entirely different plane of being when it comes to pain. Obviously we competitive runners relish the pain to some extent, but don't underestimate the difficultly of those extra 6 miles. No one is joking when they say that 20 miles really is the halfway point in terms of effort. If you train for a marathon you should do just fine, but it's difficult to forecast your race time until you do specified training for the event...and even then, you really don't know until you've run one. |

Kid, I understand and appreciate your enthusiasm for running. It's awesome that you're motivated, but don't take this advice lightly. |

Thanks for all the advice guys. I still have 2 years to look forward to it. I was just saying that because my friend she just ran her first marathon and had a blast and ran a 3:04 even though she got lost causing it to add about 2 min onto her time haha. But she says differently but ill def. keep in mind all the advice. Thanks a lot! |

I know your friend, and she is from a town where everyone is freakishly good at sports. Don't be fooled when she says the last 10K was easy. |

I have to agree with everyone else in that the marathon is a completely different type of running than other races. I was primarily a middle-distance guy in college with 1:54 800m and 3:55 1500m prs, but did okay at xc running 25:50s for 8k's. As I got older I went for longer and longer distances. I even ran 5:30 pace for the New Haven 20k one year. I've done just two marathons now and they both kicked my ass. Maybe it's just outside of my natural range, but the worst thing you can do is take the distance lightly. |

I'm with you bud. From your original question this snowballed pretty quick. Look us all up in 1.5 years when you start training for one! |

Let us know what your first marathon is so Brew and I can go watch somewhere between mile 23-24. I can't wait to see the look on your face as you "enjoy" the pain of the last 10k. |

As the not so nice woman looked at me and said at mile 20, this will be the longest 10K of your life. Unfortunately she was right. |
