My company gives me an $800 allowance each year for fitness purposes. It is taxable income, and cannot be used for apparel, shoes, etc (the list of ineligible items is quite long but apparel and shoes are the biggest catch). Last year we bought a nice treadmill and spent our personal funds to get a recumbent stationary bike. The treadmill has been a huge asset in maintaining consistency in bad weather.

So the question is, what do I get this year? I never cared for elliptical machines because my stride is longer than most machines are configured for. I admit that I don't know a lot about ellipticals though and maybe they are supposed to have an uncomfortable stride.

Thought about a decent road bike as well, but I am scared of the traffic.

Thoughts?

I second the where and hiring questions.

You have a Garmin?

Weight set/home gym?

Can you use it to pay for a personal trainer?

Get a payment plan going on an altitude tent or sauna.

Better yet, find someone who is going to buy a treadmill, buy it and sell it to them. Get the CASH.

Personal trainer fees are allowed if it is a certified trainer. The Garmin is a great idea, kinda falls into a gray area on the eligible expenses list, I will have to check on that one.

The cash thing would not be worth the risk to me. Besides, this forces me to invest in something I would never put my own funds into.

Save the money each year until you have enough to build an indoor track? I know that is not realistic, so I would purchase weights maybe? I wish I worked for a company that offered that kind of an allowance. Must be nice. Enjoy it!

Except it's probably a 'use it or lose it' allowance.

If you can get a working altitude tent for around $800 I'd say that's a steal. Unless you really want a complete home gym.

Are "happy ending" massages on the list of ineligible items? If not, then that's where I'd blow my money. Otherwise, I like BrewPat's suggestion.

I would have to second, third, or whatever the notion for the Garmin. I got one for Christmas, and it's quite an amazing thing.

Also, is there any chance it can be invested into a therapeutic hot tub/ jacuzzi or whatever you want to call it? I have a few runners I know that're looking into it for their joints and to relax in. Not sure if it's out of the range, but it might be a good thing to look into.

Went to look at ellipticals today. Every time I try one, I get can't figure out why people like them. They are clumsy and awkward, and nothing like running.

So now I am back to thinking about some sort of weight training equipment.

The Garmin would be ineligible (I checked). Bike is still a possibility, but I really feel like that is a deathwish where I live.

If you only have $800 to spend on a road bike, then I wouldn't bother. $800 would only get you the lowest end road bike from a reputable manufacturer.

Of course, $800 would you get a very nice used bike, but you really have to know what you're looking for if you're buying used.

TRX is ghey.

Buy some weights, adjustable bench, etc. You could put together a pretty good home gym with that amount of cash.

A "good" road bike costs more than $800..but a flatbar hybrid of good quality is that price or lower (kinda.)

So I vote for investment towards a decent road bike, or a membership at a local pool...

OK, Money spent. You all will probably not like it, but I gotta take care of business. During the temperate months, my wife rides bike alongside of me while I run. So I got her a Trek hybrid bike and an indoor megnetic trainer rack. Next year we will get me a bike.

All $800 could get you was a hybrid and magnetic trainer? You got ripped off.

I hate hybrid bikes because they do a little of everything, but they do NOTHING well. Compared to a stock road bike, hybrids leave you in an aerodynamically crappy position where you catch significantly more air resistance. Compared to a mountain bike, they're not as durable, and I can still get into a more aerodynamic position on my stock MTB than I could ever get into on a stock hybrid. I used the word "stock" because you can always swap out certain components to tailor your rig.

Additionally, I'd have spent the extra money for a fluid trainer instead opf a magnetic trainer. The resistance curve on a fluid is more accurate, and they're much quieter than a magnetic trainer.

For riding the trainer, it helps to have a TV in the same room to make riding more tolerable. Otherwise, get a portable DVD player, so you can watch movies or training DVDs while you ride. In my basement, we have a portable DVD player hooked up to an old stereo, so that we can run the DVD sound through the stereo, or we can watch a training DVD while running my MP3 player's sound through the stereo instead of listening to the cheesy music on the training DVD.

Another recommendation when riding the trainer is to set up a box fan in front of you and run it at medium or full speeed because otherwise, there's no moving air to help keep you cool like when riding outdoors. Lastly, I hope you had them mount 2 bottle cages on that bike. If you ride for any length of time indoors, you'll go through more than 1 bottle of water. Plus, she'll be able to carry more water for you when she follows you on your runs.

Bar ends help to make hybrids more comfortable. I disagree that they don't do anything well, my hyrbid is lighter than a MTB, never gets flat tires, is a workhorse, hauls loads, can even handle grass, gravel, going over curbs/extremely rough roads etc. Takes a lickin' and keeps on tickin'. I recommend getting bar ends, makes climbing hills better, plus more hand positions for greater comfort. Hybrids are great for casual cycling, kinda short commutes etc. Better quality components means the bike will last longer and cost less in the long run, too.

I would like a road bike, but a decent road bike STARTS at $900ish. Not worth it to pay less unless you get a nice used one. Most people don't have that kind of dime in my experience, me included. Would I like a nice comfy road bike so I can start riding centuries? Hell ya. Is it gonna happen anytime soon? Hell no.
