I'm running a 50-miler in a couple months. What are some ESSENTIAL items I need to bring with me? Any nutritional tips?

i'd take a 5 hour energy every mile, so you have maximum energy, you'll need a fanny pack to carry them. match this to your visor color.

BODY GLIDE! And a handheld bottle. Depending on your pace, gels go down easily, but take your preference (gu vs. hammer vs power gel) in case they don't have what you like at aid. If you are running just to finish, you can eat chips, sandwiches, etc. Coke and Mountain Dew are great and will be at aid stations. It's a good idea to take some S-caps or endurolytes...and Advil is a life saver, but take it before you need it. If you like to run with music, it's not a bad idea to put your iPod in your drop bag because it can get kinda lonely out there in the later miles.

Which one are you doing?

Perfect - this is all great. I'm running the TARC Summer Classic in Medford, MA, August 18. I think it used to be a 12 hour race, but they since switched it to a 50-miler. It's my first one. I'm shooting for somewhere between 8 and 9 hours. I like your suggestion about the iPod; I'm good with no music for a long while, but I think it will break things up.

All you need is the course record mile splits written on your arm so you can make sure you're ahead of pace each mile.

Astroglide. One way or another, it's gonna get used; whether it be for the race were it to take on a persona, or your own poor body, depending on how the race transpires.

Vaseline > Body glide.  Body glide changed there formula a while back and it doesn't work as well now.  Vaseline works just fine and is much cheaper.

Play around with nutrition, both with gels and solid foods.  Chips are a pretty good staple to snack on from aid stations.  If it's hot, keep salt tablets on hand to ward off cramps.  Tums work well for cramps as well.

Try doing at least a couple long runs without taking in any calories (bonk runs) to train your body to burn fat for fuel.  This will help you extend the length of time you maintain muscle glycogen.

If you need specific training advice, Relentless Forward Motion is a great reference book.    Really though, put in the time on your feet and as long as you stay ahead of your nutrition, you'll be fine getting to the finish line.

Also, depending on the race type (mountain or flat) compare the aid station mileages to the elevation profile and plan accordingly.  1 handheld bottle should be fine, but you want to try to take in at least 20 oz of water every hour.  Compare with the elevation profile to know when to tank up a little; 5 miles of climbing between aid stations will be much slower than 5 flat/downhill miles.
