I cant get my son to wear running shorts when he runs. He only does it when he has a meet and has to wear his uniform. Ive tried telling him that they are lighter and less wind resistant but he'd rather run in bball shorts. any thoughts???

Let him run in basketball shorts. He'll figure it out.

Out of experiancing the phenomenon and now coaching high school. The usual lightbulb / switch to actual running shorts is in college. In high school usually short shorts will get you made fun of or aren't cool. Then once you get to college running freshman year if you wear long shorts to practice your team will probably rip you apart and running shorts are the norm. Sometimes elite runners who wear shorter shorts or another leader on the team that doesn't care what people think will start it in high school too and spread it to the rest of the team at least for a little while.

I decided to start wearing running shorts about a week after I started running in freshman year of high school. It helped that most of the good runners on the team wore them, though. It really annoys me when people- especially other runners- comment on someone's running shorts.

It'll click eventually. In high school it's not a big deal if it's only for practice. If nothing else, he'll just feel lighter and faster when he puts on the short shorts for meets.

It's a pretty even mix at most high schools between basketball shorts and running shorts, unless the teams are pretty elite and really serious about their running.

If it makes you feel better, a kid on my team wore jeans and "skater" shoes almost all the time for practice because he always forgot his pack with all his running gear. That bastard sure seemed a lot faster when he was in short shorts for meets, hahaha. Odd type of training, eh?

Yeah, give it time for sure. I was the exact same way.. then one day, a light bulb turned on and all of the sudden running became my second religion, pretty much.

Everyone on my high school track and cross country teams wears short shorts.  I'm honestly surprised by whoever said kids make fun of other kids who wear short shorts.

Maybe it wasn't as extreme as where you were, but I know in my high school we would get called a handful of odd and rude terms/phrases for the short shorts. However, when we mocked back about their crappy team record compared to ours, they shut up really quick. Especially when the high school girls team whomped out the varsity football team in less then a half mile race.

If you're a novice at running, you can get away with basketball pants up to a point. Once you start doing hard workouts and long runs, though, basketball shorts simply feel too floppy and heavy during training. I figured out very quickly in high school that running more than a few miles in shorts coming below my knees wasn't a pleasant experience, and sooner or later, he'll figure it out too.

It also takes some getting used to. Having him hang out around more experienced runners who wear them all the time might make him feel comfortable wearing them.

Either work. Tell him that they make special running shorts that are basketball length. They are usually made of super lightweight material and still have a light liner. You can rock these in Urban areas?
