Have you tried having him actually run? That might be a good place to start.

If you want to freak him out and make him hate running then go ahead.

puppypunter2 has a good point, at this age what is more important is the love for the sport. plus i think you need to wait until hes doing alot more miles if you were planning on getting the altitude tent to help his recovery.

If you want to make him faster, strap a couple hundred bucks to his back and drop him off at 95th/King. He will learn to run... very, very fast.

naww dude youre kids fast, but hes running 15-20 miles a week. thats not enough. dont make the same mistake i made and ramp up miles 30-40 a week before highschool. he'll get the necessary aerobic base for XC and a good coach will definetly give him some nice speed for track. Just get his a** doing miles because miles now speed work later means success later. low miles now means success now wich doesnt matter if youre going for scholarships etc.

He is too young to need an altitude tent. If you push his body too hard while he is young then he will be burned out physically by the time high school comes. Just focus on him enjoying running now then think about additional aids once he is in high school

In a word, no. Not even the fastest runners I ran against in high school XC used them, so you don't need them. Unless he's competing against elite runners, it likely won't do him much good. My opinion (and again, it's just an opinion) on fancy equipment is this-while it can help supplement your training if you're already good, they can't make up for not training properly. If he wants to get faster, have him do harder, faster workouts first and see if he improves. You will be surprised.

On another note, he's only 12. He's still growing, and (if he hasn't already) will hit puberty soon. Trust me when I say that he will get plenty faster through that alone. If he wants to get faster on his own, fine. However, at his age, you should be focusing on keeping it fun for him and making sure he stays interested instead of getting faster. I coached many kids when I ran club track, and I can't tell you how many of them had amazing potential but simply lost interest in the sport.

He doesn't need an altitude tent, he just needs to be a kid.  Although in another year when he's a teenage, he'll probably need an attitude tent . . .

If he wants to get faster, he'll find a way to get faster.  Like many people on this website I've probably ran with one hundred people in my life, and met thousands who run, and only a few (in my case, 1) use an altitude tent.

Sure, I can vouch for the success of altitude tents. I have been living in one since I was six years old. Check out my log to see what a beast I am.

I looked at his log, he's a talented kid. I would get him one IF, he wants one, and if you could live with him being a mediocre runner. Don't put too much pressure on him, he's still just a kid, and make sure you keep it fun for him. I am still young and I remember the days when i was 12 and my Dad took me out to the track and made me do intervals and I hated it. When your that age pain just isn't fun. In a few years he'll get to the point where the pain is enjoyable and he can look forward to going out and killing himself in a workout, but that isn't healthy for him now, physically or otherwise. Also, don't tell him he's gonna run crazy fast times. If the training is right he'll run as fast as he'll run, but if you aim to high you get discouraged easily, especially a kid.

Anyway, thats my two cents I wish your kid the best of luck

I'll chime in: I think that its a neat idea. I'm currently reading "Running with the Kenyans" the premise being what exactly is it about Kenyans that makes them good runners. I haven't finished the book yet, but the author keeps mentioning the kids - growing up at altitude, running to school, living lives centered around manual labor/farming, emulating their elders at the local kids races, and of course being born with a genetic predisposition to sub 13:00 5ks.

So, back to your thought: Rent, don't buy. If you go through with it make sure he is sleeping okay (another observation in Running with the Kenyans...some of the top runners sleep 14 hours a day).

Like others have said, and only you will know this as a parent, but if he thinks is a super cool idea and is into it, go for it. My main concern would be the "magic pill" effect on a 12 year old - if you don't see results, or if it has adverse effects, will his reaction be "that was a fun thing to try" or "I'm not good enough to get any better".

Check out the book though...its a great read: http://amazon.com/Running-Kenyans-Passion-Adventure-Secrets/dp/0345528794/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1346808310&sr=8-1&keywords=running+with+the+kenyans
