I have been searching for a good diet to go along with my workout program but have had a lot of trouble. I was wondering if someone could give me some tips on how and what to eat to become a fit and faster runner. Any input would be appreciated!

All right! Get ya some protein in there, and I always say the most important thing in your diet should be chocolate milk after the run.

start with water, fruits and veggies and build from there. Protein shakes are a good way to recover after a workout although whole foods are usually the best way to go. Make sure you get high quality supplements, there is a lot of usesless crap out there. It's worth the extra money to get high quality stuff that will actually do something for you. I'm not sure that a good diet will make you fit and faster, but it can allow you to feel and look better, as well as recover faster. Be careful about getting diet advice from the running community. Some of the things I see runners eating and drinking after a race indicates that there is a lot of room for improvement in the typical runners diet.

Avoid things such as:
hot dogs
cheeseburgers
beer
soda
anything deep fried

Sure, many runners eat this stuff and run fast, but they are usually the same runners who feel like crap on almost a daily basis.

There is a saying in the running community "if you are training heavy, eat whatever you want, if the engine is hot enough anything will burn"
This is one of the worst pieces of dietary advice ever. You can burn lots of stuff, and lots of stuff creates toxic fumes. Whether you want that residue in your body is up to you.

Thank you very much! I realize workouts are what make you faster not your diet but it would definitely have to help if you are eating the right stuff. I agree with you on the statement. I have never really believed that it can be true to eat what you want even if you are training hard.

I totally agree with getting some protein, but chocolate milk is a gift from the running gods to man kind.

We should come up with names for these new gods, perhaps even start a new religion, which in turn could very well bring back the post "He's coming back"

I shall:

First - runnin god = almighty one
Second - football god = savior
Third - devil = college
Offical drink = beer
Offical food = prezels

all shall respect and pay daily homage to the almithy one by running several miles daily. Our savior requires our saturday's and sunday's and monday night's and hell everynight as long as football is on to watch and enjoy as we drink heavily. The devil will tempt you with classes and homework daily that will take you away from the almighty and the savior.
