What do you think is a harder sprint. the 200 or the 400?

Finally someone posts down here. i thought all you sprinters died.
at first thought i'd say 400 meters. It's a longer run and you have to have good stamia. Yet in the 200, your sprinting at closer to full speed must of the run. Like going 90% around the curve and full out at the last 100 meters.

i don't know. i've run my share of 400s and in jr high ran a decent amount of 2s. the 200 is pretty much an all out sprint but if you're running against good enough competition in the 4 it's an almost all out 200 sprint plus 200 more meters before it.

I'd say the 400 gets a little more rough, cause right when you're about to die in the 200, its over.

I'm by no means a sprinter, but in my experiences the 2 has been just a flat out sprint with little problem while the 4 has been a balls to the wall hurtfest to see who has the most guts.

I run both races. I'm primarily a 400 runner though and I'd definitely vouch for the 400 in this debate. The 200 is easy for me to all out sprint without thinking about it but the 400 is a race that forces you to endure the rigors of not only physical stamina but mental stamina. You definitely have to have the guts to push it into that extra gear when you're in a dead heat all out sprint with 100 meters left against another guy.

Come on now noone mention the 800.
Its hard to say. ima mid distance runner wit mediocre 200 speed.
Even tho the 200 is a B, to me at least, when the last 50 meters and i want to go faster.
but the 4 is harsher. The last 250 is always the worst in my opinion.

It depends on how you're asking the question. If you're asking which is harder to run, then the answer is probably the 400 because it is a flat out sprint for 200 more meters. But if you're asking which is harder to succeed in, then the answer is probably the 200.

One reason is that most sprinters just don't like sprinting a 400 so if they have to choose, they'll choose the 200. So, more talented sprinters end up running the 200. For example; LaShawn Merrit can't beat Usain Bolt in a 200, but Usain Bolt can be LaShawn Merrit in a 400. So, the 200 is harder to do well in, but the 400 is harder to actually sprint.

definitely the 400

our school uses distance runners and sprinters in the 400
the sprinters usually lead for the first 200 and die but the distance runners can maintain their speed and beat them

Of course it is!
That's throwing two of the rough 400's back to back (which it seems that the majority are in agreeement that the 400's the hardest).

i disagree entirely. 400 is definitely more rough for the 800 for me. i am not sure about 200 or 400. but 300 hurdles and college 400 hurdles probably are the most difficult races in track at least for me personally.

You are all high. The worst ever is the third lap of a mile. Sweet mother of Mercy I hate that 400 meters with a passion.

Some of you are talking about a High School level, others are talking about it at a World level... some of you are combining the two without specifying. I'M CONFUSED!

These are COMPLETELY DIFFERENT things people!!!!

At a High school level, of course you will be able to find "distance runners" that can beat "sprinters" because high schoolers are Lazy and many of them call themselves "sprinters" when in fact they are just kids trying to get a Varsity Letter, or who have nothing else do do but they don't want to run more than once around the track. (Of course that is not ALL sprinters)... and then there are also "distance runners" who might also want that varsity letter and do long events because less people do them and it increases their chances of scoring, or maybe they are trying to loose weight, or they just like the to train in a group... but they are not competitive.... In High School there is a HUGE range of ability because then you have people who are the future of the sport and seem "really talented" and "well rounded" and kick a$$ everywhere...

A "Well Rounded" distance runner will not beat a "sprinter" at worlds for these 2 reasons,
1. the sprinters are WAY higher quality
2. A well rounded distance runner probably wont make it to worlds

At worlds you have to specialize. Even if you are talented enough to do many events, most runners target an event and train specifically for it months and months and months and MONTHS in advance. If you are "well rounded" your good at everything but great at nothing, and you need to be great to make it to Worlds! (The only exception to this is a Decathlete or Pentathlete... and they do not toe the line with Usain Bolt for a reason)

In my opinion the most difficult event in track and field is the one that makes you suffer the most. Nothing, I repeat-- NOTHING-- is more painful in the sport than putting all of your heart into one event, and then coming up just shy of your goal...

So the hardest event is also the easiest event-- YOUR event.

Well put cclark1121. I just started running in september 2009 and right now my favorite event is the half marathon, no doubt. I enjoy sprinting as well as longer distance. I hvae never put my all into a sprint or a long distance race for that matter. The only thing i try to do is beat my personal best each and every time, unless i'm using a race as a training run.

To answer the original question... when i do repeats, i find 200s easier than 400s. I find 5ks harder than mile repeats. It depends how much you put into i think. I find half marathons easier than 5ks. I find 5ks harder than 400s. I find marathons harder than half marathons. So in my book, half marathons are comparable to 200s :P

I was in high school when track and field went from yards to meters. I ran 10.2 in the 100 21.6 second 200 and a 47.4 in the 400. I loved the 200 and 100 but my coach saw that my real gift was in the 400 and higher. Unfortunately I didn't listen to him because I would have gotten a scholarship if I had been less successful in the sprints. I was the fastest kid in my school from my sophomore year on so I could be lazy. I refused to run the 400.

My feeling is that if the race isn't hard when your running, you aren't doing something right. If you see Bolt at the end of a 100 meters he is tired and sweating as much as a 400 meter runner.

I would say, don't think how hard the race is, find out where you are gifted and what you enjoy. I look back and wish I hadn't been so stubborn with my coach. That 47.4 I ran, was the first time I ran the 400 and I never ran another. That year 48.2 won state in my class.

stupid question... 400 is harder than the 200... physically with the build up of lactic acid and mentally with "the wall"

Hmm... In my opinion, this is about the same as asking if someone would rather run a marathon in wooden shoes, or ride a bicycle 150 miles with no seat--there is no right answer!
